It is certainly not for dislike of the breed that we have decided to no
longer show or breed Standard Bull Terriers.  There are many
problems facing the breed today. (See Article the Dangers Facing
Bull Terriers.)  We adore the breed; however, because of time
constraints (I work full time) I can not stay home to keep mother
and puppies separated and personally I feel if a dam will not care
for her puppies, she should not be bred.  My experience with
Standard Bull Terriers is that they are very poor mothers.  Most
breeders remove puppies from the female and only allow them
together for supervised feeding.  Working full time makes this very
difficult, plus, I am used to mothers who care deeply for their
puppies.  Thirty years ago I thought Rottweilers were bad
mothers.  They occasionally laid on a puppy.  I now realize just
what good mothers they are.
Another issue I am concerned about is the type of folks calling me
interested in Standard Bull Terriers.  It quite frankly makes me
afraid for the breed.  I certainly do not want to see a dog I have
produced walking down the street with a log chain around its neck
or worse.  Thirty years ago I saw the same thing happening
with the Rottweiler, my first love.  I determined then I
would not breed another litter of Rottweilers.
I can, with pride, say I did not contribute to the problems we see
today, although I could have made a lot of money in those early
years when they became so popular.  Recently on Animal Planet a
well known breeder from those years was lamenting what has
happened to the Rottweiler, blaming "back yard" breeders, but one
must ask, where did those back yard people get their dogs to begin
with?  Back then few people even knew what a Rottweiler was
and if 7 dogs showed up in the ring, it was a crowd. As I fear the
Bullie will go the way of the Rottie, I must cry once more, No!  I
won't be part of this trend.
I am not totally deserting the Bull Terrier breed as I have every
intention of continuing with Miniature Bull Terriers which do not
seem to have the lack of maternal instincts that Standards display.
